Expert offers salon-specific stress workshops

Salon and spa owners are being offered help in dealing with everyday stress caused by working in, and on, a busy beauty or hair business. Alex Crow, founder of Stress Boffin, is offering Stress Workshops and training on Stress Management, NLP, Hypnosis and Mindfulness, and related subjects aimed specifically at managing stress and stressful clients.

“Often salon owners are extremely driven, working long hours continuously in the quest to have a successful hairdressing business. Their optimistic belief is that the harder you work the better their business will fare. But work-related stress is now one of the biggest health hazards in the workplace, and it's difficult to identify,” explains Alex.

He adds:

“Causes are difficult demanding customers, overwork, too many customers per day as well as outside pressures, feeling harassed, limited funding as well as the uncertainty of starting or maintaining a successful salon business.”

If you manage staff in your salon or spa, you have a responsibility to assess the nature of all health risks at work which includes stress. Stress manifests itself in common symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, problems sleeping, muscle tension, skin outbreaks, stomach problems, irritability, mood swings, aggression and more.

Stress can also lead to an increase in sick days and the need for longer breaks during the working day.

Alex suggests the following for managing stress in the salon:

  • You and your staff's days should be re-balanced with periods of rest, relaxation, meditation and exercise in order to avoid burn out.
  • Get your staff to take a break, a lunch break it's imperative to a healthy digestion and go for a walk afterward outside in the fresh air to clear the mind.
  • Take a coffee break to talk to colleagues and if you can organise it then start the day with a 5 or 10-minute meditation break for all the staff together or get them to try it at home. Try apps such as Headspace, Insight Timer, Harmony Hypnosis or Breathe all available at the App Store, or log onto the Alex Crow website - stressboffin.com and download a free Mindful breathing MP3.
